This research project addresses four direct needs that have been identified by the nursery and greenhouse industry.
These are water and nutrient management, stormwater monitoring (enabled by the technology), and an economic assessment of the costs of technology and the associated private and public benefits. We are proactively determining how we can lower the cost of the technology and encourage its adoption by commercial ornamental producers.
However, these four needs are not the only applications for wireless sensor networks in these environments – equally important are associated benefits such as lowering energy costs, reducing labor and management costs and integrated disease and pest management costs for all growers.
