Sensor Networks

We have set up a four EM50R dataloggers (Decagon Devices) with five EC-5 soil moisture sensors each and one additional datalogger with light, temperature, rain, and humidity sensors to monitor environmental conditions.

All dataloggers are connected to a laptop computer via a radio base station in the nursery office, that allows for real-time monitoring of the data from the EM50R radio nodes located throughout the nursery.

Our long-term objective is to understand how water content changes in the container substrate between irrigations, and to determine how these dynamics are affected by environmental conditions.

Will Ross is very concerned about using all resources (especially water and nutrients) as efficiently as possible, since he is very aware of the economic and environmental impacts on his business and the local environment.
